Rana M. Mays M.D, FAAD, is Dual-Board-certified in Dermatology and Internal Medicine, with expertise in Medical, Complex & Autoimmune Disease, Surgical Dermatology, and Hair Loss/ Alopecia.
Dr. Mays graduated Summa Cum Laude from medical school on a fast integrated track after receiving a full honors scholarship to college. She proceeded to complete a complete 3 -year Internal Medicine residency at the University of Louisville Hospital affiliated with the prestigious James Brown Cancer Center, serving as chief resident. During her research at the cancer center, Dr. Mays led the study on the effects of melanoma oncogene transcription on disease mortality. Dr. Mays practiced as an Internal Medicine specialist for several years before moving to Houston to pursue her passion for Dermatology. She joined the prestigious Center for Clinical Studies under the direction of world-renown Dermatological Professor Stephen K. Tyring, MD PhD, serving as leading investigator in over 30+ clinical trials in psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, zoster, acne, rosacea, vitiligo, keloids, alopecia, skin cancer, and novel cosmetic injectables such as Kybella. She also served as the main investigator on collaborative studies with NASA scientists on the reactivation of zoster.
Dr. Mays went on to attend the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine for her Dermatology residency with extensive training in Medical Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology, Cosmetic Dermatology, Surgical Dermatology & Laser Surgery under the direction of renown Dr. Sylvia Hsu and Dr. Ramsey Markus. She completed her Dermatology residency serving as chief resident and scoring in the 98th national percentile on the Dermatology Boards.
Dr. Mays practiced in Houston for several years and continued to serve as national investigator on clinical trials as well as instructor of clinical Dermatology. Her interest in hair disorders helped pioneer her introduction of PRP therapy as a novel hair restoration modality . She then went on to found her own practice in her hometown of Louisville, KY where she pioneered development of children’s skincare for sensitive and eczema prone skin. She was featured in numerous local magazines and media due to her contribution of providing same day service for Dermatology expertise and second opinion. After many years of practice, Dr. Mays and her family relocated to beautiful Southern California to be closer to her parents. She is excited to create Mays Dermatology in Corona Del Mar leading the way as a pioneer in Direct Care. In her micro-practice, Dr. Mays focuses on high quality, competent and expert Dermatologic diagnosis and treatment with on time, same day, extensive visits. Her patients receive a “VIP” experience with direct access to expert competent care.
Dr. May’s interests include medical, complex dermatologic disorders, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology with special interest in acne, psoriasis, skin cancer, difficult rashes, contact dermatitis, autoimmune disorders and hair disorders. Dr. Mays has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in medical and cosmetic Dermatology and lectures nationally in the field. Dr. Mays special interest lies in Hair loss , Acne, Rosacea, Anti-Aging, Preventative Dermatology, Holistic and Functional Dermatology, and complex Dermatologic disorders. Dr. Mays believes in the “whole” patient approach when it comes to skin health and is a big advocate of proper expert diagnosis as the first step to effective treatment. She focuses on prevention, targeted treatment, and early restorative and corrective approach uniquely tailored to the patient’s assessment to achieve best result.
Dr. Mays has been awarded America’s Top Dermatologist and recognized as “Top Doctor” by her physician peers for more than 10 years. She was nominated to the “40 under 40” category in 2020 by her fellow peers and patients for education and improvement on Dermatologic access. Dr. Mays is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons, Skin cancer Foundation, and American Society of Aesthetic & Cosmetic Physicians.
